Five Impressive Buildings In Manchester
From small beginnings as a Roman settlement and then a modest market town in the Middle Ages, Manchester has grown to become a city of over half a million people. The Industrial Revolution changed Manchester and transformed it into possibly the most important city in the north of England. Since this enormous event, there have been huge strides in the city’s architecture that have revolutionised Manchester’s skyline. Here are the five most impressive buildings in Manchester:
1. Manchester Cathedral
Manchester Cathedral is a Grade 1 listed building that has its origins in an Anglo Saxon church that was destroyed by Danish invaders in 923. The cathedral as we know it now was gradually built and added to from 1491 to 1882 and its tower reaches the lofty height of 135 feet.
2. Manchester Town Hall
Manchester Trade Hall is a Victorian, neo-gothic structure that was built in 1877. Designed by Alfred Waterhouse, the building was completed during the heyday of Britain’s industrial renaissance and features huge ceremonial rooms like the Great Hall and faces St Peter’s Sqaure and Albert Square.
3. CIS Tower
The CIS Tower was completed in 1962 and was built to show off the co-operative movement. It is 387 feet tall, is a grade 2 listed building and is now considered iconic by the residents of Manchester.
4. The Corn Exchange
The Corn Exchange is a fitting reminder of Manchester’s glorious industrial past. Once being used as a corn exchange (surprisingly), the building was bombed by the IRA in 1996 and has since become a modern shopping centre. Now the Corn Exchange is being redeveloped into a dining destination with 17 restaurants.
5. The City of Manchester Stadium (Stadium)
A hallowed sporting cathedral to some Mancunians, a huge lair built on oil money to others, the Etihad stadium is an impressive building by anyone’s standards. Boasting a capacity of 55,000 for Manchester City games and 60,000 for concerts, the stadium was built to host the Commonwealth Games in 2002.
